Nothing touches our hearts and soothes our souls more than music. Across the world, various genres of music have entertained, enthralled and pacified audiences through generations. Kerala, a state rich in culture and heritage, is home to a number of musical genres as well. From classical Carnatic to tribal folk, music has been an endearing part of the life of people. Palakkad is indeed one of the most popular districts when it comes to art and culture. No wonder Peruvemba is located in Palakkad.
Peruvemba is a village like no other. Travelling through this village, you will hear the rhythmic beats of various percussion instruments that are being tested, tuned or even played. Peruvemba is home to a number of leather-based musical instrument manufacturing units. Some of the most common instruments produced here include chenda, mridangam, tabla, maddalam, timila and idakka. This profession has been the chief livelihood of the Kadayan community who live in the village, preserving their ancient craft for over 200 years and making significant contributions to the cultural fabric of Kerala. Currently, there are about 74 families in the village who are continuing this tradition. Musicians from various parts of India visit Peruvemba to buy personalised musical instruments that they use to perform.
